Thanks, Devon. At least, I don’t have to see him ever again. Some little part of me wants to send an update to all these doctors who have been dismissing me after I have a diagnosis in place so they realize that they don’t know as much as they think they do. It probably wouldn’t matter, though.

Thanks, Frank. It seems that the underlying cause is genetic, so actual healing would take a miracle. The problem is that, without a diagnosis, it’s hard to get insurance to cover what I need to manage my symptoms.

Thanks, Beth. I’m more determined than ever! Today, I had a call with the nurse case-manager assigned by my insurer, who is helping me get through this maze.

That is a strange thing for a doctor to say. I can only hope he or she had good intentions, though it lacks empathy. Please continue to take the best care of yourself you can while you persist in your search.

I’ll keep working on it, JoAnna. I must say I was surprised by the remark – and it’s sticking with me – but I was particularly disturbed because that hospital system is supposed to be known for their collaborative approach to care. I could see saying I can’t help you but not that I can’t give you any idea of who might be able to.

I wonder if it would be healthy to let the doctor know your thoughts and feelings, though maybe you already did. If not, that’s okay, too. They’re supposed to make referrals.

This was a new specialist so will wind up being a one-off. I’ve so far avoided doing the survey that was sent out from the hospital because I am seeing other specialists with them and don’t want to rile things up.

Such a blanket pronouncement coming from a specialist. “I don’t know, so you may just have to give up.” A touch of arrogance in that, it seems. I’m so glad you have someone helping you with the insurance maze.

I’m learning how narrow specialists become in their viewpoint. It’s almost as if they forget about the rest of the body. I know they learned about all the body systems in med school, though…
