SoCS: alarm bells in the US

Vote for Democracy #48

I’ve been experiencing life here in the United States with increasing alarm.

The cruelty, lawlessness, and incompetence of the Trump administration continues to accelerate while the suffering here and abroad continues to mount.

I will spare you a stream-of-consciousness list of all the component parts of this catastrophe, but the destruction by Trump of the East Wing of the White House presents a decent metaphor – lie about what you are planning and rush in and wreck things.

Millions upon millions of people here are fighting back to save our democracy and have a chance to re-build it and slowly repair to the extent possible the global damage inflicted but we haven’t been able to turn the tide yet. I don’t know how long it will take but we won’t give up.

Joyce Vance published her first book this week, entitled Giving Up is Unforgivable: A Manual for Keeping a Democracy. It’s what we need to do.

We won’t give up.

  1. Thank you for speaking up, Joanne. The destruction of the east wing is an accurate representative and metaphor symbolizing what this administration is doing. Thank you for using the word, yet, in “we haven’t been able to turn the tide yet.” I hope and pray more and more “republicans” will open their eyes and their hearts. We won’t give up!

      1. Thanks, Joanne! And you don’t need to apologize. I know if it had been up to you, he never would have made it close to the White House again. And it’s not like we believe a word that comes out of DT’s mouth anyway. Give him a few hours and he’ll have changed his mind again.

    1. No, Joyce Vance is no relation to JD. She is a former US attorney from Alabama. I believe she resigned just before Trump’s first term began. She has been teaching at law school, doing television commentary, writing a substack called Civil Discourse, and does a couple of different podcasts in conjunction with other prominent lawyers. She is married to a judge. Her father-in-law was also a judge who was, sadly, murdered by a pipe bomb.

  2. Still standing, still speaking, still pushing back in every way I can. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and we all have to be prepared to be in this for years. Depressing but it’s reality now.

    1. Very true, Laura. I so appreciate knowing that you and millions of others are in this for the long haul. It’s going to take all of us – and long-term as you point out – to preserve our democracy.
