Yesterday, for the first time in a hundred years, the United States House of Representatives failed to choose a Speaker on the first day of the new Congress, when Kevin McCarthy failed to get a majority of votes on three attempts, despite the fact that his Republican party holds a slim majority.

Sadly, that’s true. Listening to Jim Jordan listing what the Republicans want to do this term is upsetting because it means that nothing will get passed that the Senate and President will also support.

Yes, we can and, I hope, will. One scenario is that the Republican House will be so obstructive that voters turn them out in 2024. A more hopeful one is that the House Republicans who actually care about governing will join with the House Democrats and the Senate to pass reasonable legislation that the president can sign to make life better for all Americans and to support peace and the common good for people everywhere (and for our planet, which is our most basic, fundamental need). Here’s hoping…

Unfortunately, the people voting for Jim Jordan instead are, shall I say, not known for being sensible. The best hope for a functional Congress would be an actual moderate Republican becoming Speaker with support of the Democrats. Probably won’t happen, but…
